Dancing at Guanabara nightclub. Video report by Gizem Melek.

Free Brazilian Forró dance classes

3rd March 2009

by Gizem Melek

European, African and indigenous rhythms are what create Forró music and you can learn to move your body to this beat for free.

Some people drink Caipirinhas in a corner, while others dance on the stage to the rythmic Brazilian music. It's not Rio's Carnival, we're still here in central London.

Every week, dance lovers feel the spirit and heat at Guanabara with typical Brazilian dances.

Sundays are Forró nights. Katia Samtos Goulart, Forró teacher, told Skinflint, "We are teaching Forró dance. It is quite similar to Salsa and people love it. Every Sunday, different people come to the classes."

"We are inviting anybody who would like to have fun with us, free of charge," Goulart remarked.

Dance lovers are also experience other Brazilian dances. Goulart says; “We do have samba lessons as well, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday we have Brazilian Lambada.”

A meeting point for different cultures

This week, first-timers shared the stage with experienced Forró dancers.

Sarah Mulville is one of the regulars: “We’ve come to Guanabara to learn Forró. We’ve been coming here for four years. It’s great fun and the teachers are fabulous.”

Every week the venue becomes a showcase for people from different cultures.

Martinas Pocius says; “I’m really enjoying coming here and meeting Brazilian people, trying to learn to dance Forró and Samba. Music is perfect and I found plenty of friends here and I think this place is a paradise.”

Jacqueline McGregor told Skinflint; “I went to a Brazilian band earlier on today and they invited me to here to learn Forró with them. This is my first lesson and I’m having so much fun.”

Jed Karuzas was another new student; “I’m trying to learn to dance like the guys are dancing here. This is quite cool and girls are really nice.”
